About our cause
Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus (BrightonGMC) was created in January 2005 when a small group of friends who loved singing were disappointed at the lack of a non-scene space in which to socialise. They created a space where people can celebrate music, enjoy the fellowship of other like-minded people and contribute to the local communities of which we are part.
Membership is open to anyone who self-identifies as a man and is LGBTQ+ friendly.
We meet weekly on a Tuesday night from 7:30pm ’til and once a month at the weekend for a more in-depth rehearsal with various workshops on vocal technique, performance training and to practice choralography (choreography for choirs).
Your donation can help us to make these ambitions a reality and ensure we continue in our mission which has three guiding principles, our “Three S’s”:
Singing – the celebration of life and music through male voice harmonies;
Socialising – using this activity to develop social bonds that help people to feel connected with a sometimes lonely world;
Support – to be there for each other, both collectively and individually, when the chips are down, and to also be there for the communities in which the chorus operates.
Since the pandemic the choir has expanded and we have ambitious plans to support the needs of an increasingly diverse community of members which includes:
- Increase our singing capacity to support a growing base of participants
- Prepare the choir to represent Brighton and the UK in International music and choir festivals
- Increasing the number of rehearsals and range of workshops to expand the chorus to reach and support more members of the LGBTQ+ community
- Support members of the community who suffer from social isolation, mental health issues and other emotional and social challenges, particularly younger members new to coming out, and feeling vulnerable.
Our events also support local performance venues with much needed business and footfall.
