About our cause
17-24-30 National Hate Crime Awareness Week (1184819) was initially launched as a Facebook group in March 2009 to mark the 10th anniversary of the nail bomb attack on the Admiral Duncan in Soho.
Since then we have organised the three April Acts of Remembrance to mark the anniversaries in Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho each year.
We believe it is important to remember those we lost, to stand in solidarity with those affected by these and other awful attacks, and to educate people about what happened in the hope that we can prevent these attacks happening again.
In the same year, after the death of Ian Baynham we organise the first London Vigil Against Hate Crime, supported by over 10,000 people in Trafalgar Square and over 29,000 shares on Facebook.
Watching a video of the London Vigil, Ian's mum said "At least people cared about my son".
We believe an essential part of what we do is about being there for people affected by hate crime, helping organise the response when tragic situations happen, and signposting people to the advice and support available.
By 2012 the London Vigils Against Hate Crime evolved into National Hate Crime Awareness Week #NationalHCAW which aims to encourage the authorities (Government, Councils and Police), key partners and communities affected by hate crime to work together to tackle local hate crime across the UK.
Each year we light a National Candle of Hope and Remembrance for those affected by hate crime which sits in St Paul's Cathedral for the duration of the national weel.
We organise an annual H.O.P.E. Campaign - to raise Hate crime awareness, the improve Operational responses to hate crime, to Prevent hate crime and to Engage communities affected by hate crime.
We need your support to get every council, every police service and every community across the UK involved.
Our small anti-hate crime charity is run by a dedicated group of volunteers, from a kitchen table in the South of London.
In August 2019 we were recognised by the Charity Commission and became a registered charity (1184819).
We need your help so we can continue doing what we do best - bringing people together to help make the world a better place.
We are looking for volunteers so if you have time on your hands and would like to be involved please get in touch.
Thank you for your support and good luck!
Best wishes from all of us at 17-24-30 NationalHCAW,
Mark Healey
PS. We were founded by members of the LGBT+ Community in response to attacks on our community, tackling anti-LGBT hate crime alongside all other forms of hate crime is central to everything we do.
