About our cause
Northern Proud Voices (NPV) provides an opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (and our non-LGBTQ+ friends) in the North East of England to come together to experience the joy of singing. The choir promotes a positive image of LGBTQ+ people in bringing together people of different ages, backgrounds, cultures, faiths and abilities to sing and perform.
Our membership is non-audition, open to anyone over the age of 18.
Having been formed In 2011 we are the longest running LGBTQ+ community choir in the North East and have consistently provided a safe space for our members to learn and perform music, share with others in a variety of public performances such as concerts, street singing and other events throughout the year. Through a love of singing, our express intent is to support each other, entertain, educate and increase visibility of the LGBTQ+ community with the wider public.
An important aspect of NPV is the provision of a supportive environment for our members for the development of the LGBTQ+ community, thereby reducing social exclusion and loneliness, and improving mental wellbeing.
We have two seasons a year, summer and winter, in which we rehearse and perform different set-lists. The summer season culminates in a performance at Newcastle Pride in July, after which we take a break in August, returning in September to pick-up and perform our winter set which includes various Christmas Carols.
We’ve previously been invited and have been delighted to attend various events and regularly perform at Durham Pride, Newcastle Pride and Newcastle Cathedral. We have also performed at a local hospital in support of their LGBT History Month event and a private 50th birthday party.
While having over 100 members on our books, we usually have about 50-60 members attend rehearsal each week and we're always taking on new members.
Your support through The Rainbow Lottery is so very much appreciated and helps us continue doing what we absolutely love!
