About our cause
The T&Coffee Trans Network was founded by a transgender woman, Samantha Howard, who wanted to provide members of a marginalised and largely online community a safe and friendly space to turn to when seeking support. The project was designed to bring people together, in safe alcohol -free social spaces, allowing for peer to peer in-person support with volunteers on hand to be welcoming and provide specific information as required.
The underlying concept of T&Coffee was to use Café Locations around the country to act as regular safe meeting spots for trans & gender-diverse people.
All meetings are open to people at any stage or point in their gender journey, accessible, without any special entry processes or criteria and crucially alcohol-free spaces. The level of substance abuse in the LGBTQ+ community is nearly 300% higher than in the wider community.
We believe that alcohol-free social safe spaces are a much-needed change and something of which there are nothing like enough.
The project is designed to bring people together, allowing for peer to peer in-person support, with volunteers on hand to be welcoming and provide specific information as required. It is free for all attendees, with the only cost being any food or drink they wish to purchase from the hosting café. This means that people will be in safe publicly accessible spaces, with no need to make any payment for joining or attending, whilst having the assurance of the security offered by a nationally recognised brand.
At the end of 2019 café locations, provided by Tesco around the country, acted as monthly safe meeting spots for trans & gender-diverse people. Against the sudden and unavoidable conditions created by the global Covid-19 pandemic, a community of people, who finally felt they had a space, were about to return to their isolation.
The T&Coffee team could not accept that, so they quickly developed an online solution in the TACv virtual sessions every week.
They are a success, with membership rising rapidly and now covering the UK, USA, European communities. The project developed to meet the demands of the members pushing the limits of what could be achieved in such circumstance.
Through some incredible member created content and ideas, we have seen the group grow. From once weekly sessions to multiple events each week, including live game streams, podcasts, interviews, various time zones for social sessions and even with the launch of our first benefit album "History - #BeOnTheRightSideOfHistory"
The continued drive to restart the face to face sessions is what is moving the T&Coffee team forward. With people now “depending” on the online TACv Sessions, we aren't prepared to decrease the service offering so, the resources of the team have been increased to ensure a smooth and safe route for continuing whilst also getting back to providing face-2-face sessions.
We are completely volunteer run, with an amazing team of people and all of the money coming from personal investment, donations and from the member driven benefit album.
T&Coffee is on a mission to ensure every trans or gender diverse person has a space they feel safe, included and valued as member of a real community.
